[edit] Introduction

Cyprus is situated about just a few kilometres from the far eastern end of the Mediterranean. It has had a colourful past being colonized by Turkey, Greece & Britain over the years. The country was partitioned in 1974 and remains partitioned to this day.

[edit] Transportation

[edit] Air

Southern Cyprus is served by 2 major airports at Laranca Aiport (LCA) and Paphos. Nicosia airport remains in the UN buffer zone. The north has a single airport ar Ercan which (I believe) is only served from Turkey.

[edit] Sea

Cyprus has ports at Limassol, Laranca & Famagusta.

[edit] Rail

There is little public transportation in Cyprus. A railway did exist but ceased in 1951. It ran from Famagusta to Nicosia and then on to Morphou.

[edit] Road

Road conditions in Cyprus are relatively good. Dual carriageways link most major towns to one another. Road signs are in English and Greek in the South and Turkish in the North. Road markings in the South are very similar to those in the UK.

Driving in Cyprus can be frustrating. Drivers are fast and impatient and red lights can seem just for information some times.

[edit] Language

Southern Cyprus speak a Greek dialect. Television and radio, however, are broadcast primarily in Greek without the dialect. If you are already able to speak greek you should have no trouble making yourself understood. Understanding the reply might take a while though :-). English is fairly widely spoken across the island and most people in the more populated areas understand it.

Northern Cyprus speak Turkish. English is spoken here also although not as widely.
